“HALF-LIFE” is a fictional non-violent protest group fighting for 50% protected land and sea territory, based on biologist E. O. Wilsonʼs book “Half-Earth: Our Planet’s fight for Life” (2016). The project consisted of a complete branding suite for the organisation, as well as merchandise, posters, a motion infographic and a web concept.
HALF-LIFE is a protest group, but their communication style is not intended to induce fear and outrage and further aggravate climate anxiety, but rather to motivate people, activate participation, and embody hope for the future. This is also reflected in the design style, which takes inspiration from the aesthetics and retro futurism of the 1950s and 60s.
Part of the project was a 20 second motion infographic explaining the group’s aims shortly. Contrary to my expectations, the more challenging animations to create were not the “big”, screen-filling ones, but rather the details like turning the half-circle into a globe grid icon in an elegant way.
